Human Development: Ages 6 to 7

Child development, or human development, is the process of a person becoming physically, emotionally, and socially mature. The following list of characteristics can be expected for someone who is from the ages of 6 to 7 years old. These characteristics may not be applicable or comprehensive for every individual. This list is part of a series of articles on K12Genie that group children by age and list characteristics of human development. By providing you with this information, we hope it helps you better understand children and ultimately better relate with them.
Ages 6 to 7
- Are developing greater auditory and visual discrimination
- Follow directions with greater concentration
- Demonstrate greater span of attention
- Show an increased vocabulary
- Show interest in science–growing things, animals, space
- Develop awareness of rules in games
- Feel comfortable with structure and schedules–knowing what to expect
- Define “self” largely on how the significant adults in their lives see them
- Recognize simple cause and effect
- Recognize hierarchy
- Increasingly enjoy spending longer periods of time with other children
- Appreciate elaboration and humor
- Are increasingly able to work in groups
- Are willing to listen to others and share ideas
- Develop increased self-confidence as their skills improve
- Continue to deal with individual and group differences
- Are extremely susceptible to adult role models and their values and beliefs
- Are sensitive to and may be afraid of criticism or disapproval
- Are developing skills of inquiry and discovery
- Are able to write down findings and new information learned
